The lightbulb moment!

The concept of Write Size was born when MD Ross Williams was watching his four year old son struggling to write with a standard size pencil. Ross, who works with scaled drawings of buildings on a day to day basis, noticed a significant disconnect between the size of the standard pencil and his sons hand – there was simply no balance or control.

Understanding the importance of scale, Ross quickly set about finding his son a pencil that was the right size for his hand. He quickly realised there were no ‘child size’ pencils available in the market place, with all standard pencils being made to the same size, adult size.

Determined to give all children the best possible chance in their education, Ross decided he would create the world’s first pencils made to scale for children. Looking at the core and diameter to create the perfect writing instrument for young children.

The Journey

Shortly after creating the idea of Write Size Ross met Surlender Pendress, a single mum of two who had a desire to make a difference in children’s lives. Needless to say Surlender loved the idea of making small pencils for children, who after all are small people.

Surlender knew how difficult learning to write can be for children, as she herself struggled to help her children improve their writing ability. With many tantrums and the phrase ‘my hand hurts’ used frequently along the way!

Along with many parents / teachers Surlender had never thought that the writing tool she was giving her child may actually be making learning to write harder.

All standard pens and pencils are made to the roughly the same size for one reason… to fit our adult size hands to give us the perfect balance and control when writing.

So why do you give young children a standard pencil (which is longer than a pen) to learn to write with?

Surlender and Ross worked tirelessly to create the perfect pencil for children, giving the best grip and control when writing.

After extensive research, Write Size pencils were created with a hexagonal shape, softer core, shorter length and wider diameter giving children the perfect balance and control.

Vision Statement

Working closely with distributors we will provide easy accessibility to our products, and within 5 years no child should learn to write with an adult size tool.

Write Size aim to improve the way children learn to write by giving them the right size tools for the job, as we understand it is impractical for them to use adult size pencils.

All children of all backgrounds should have the opportunity to learn to write easily and quickly, to help enhance their education right from the start.  We believe all children should have the same advantage of learning to write with a pencil that fit their hands correctly.

The quicker a child learns to write the quicker they learn to read and spell, as writing is a fundamental learning block of education.

Our mission is to improve the learning experience of children around the world.

  • How to INSTANTLY improve your child’s handwriting!

I write like a 5 year old. Seriously! I literally cannot write entirely joined up. I would love to blame my teachers, but it’s probably not their fault, they did the best they could with what they had, aka ME! It’s SOOO easy to look at your child’s writing and think “Hey, it looks a bit, erm, messy(?) now, but I’m sure

It’s great to see any product that encourages children to get writing. I particularly like the fact that the pencils are sized to fit hands in all sizes and the thickness of them makes them comfortable to write with. I’ve been trying to help my two year old nephew with holding a pencil, he holds it too far up and then struggles with control. I can’t wait to take these perfectly sized pencils home for him to try and solve this issue.

Charlotte Gater, Head of Education at Explore Learning

Handwriting requires frequent and discrete, direct teaching. Pupils should be able to form letters correctly and confidently. The size of the writing implement (pencil, pen) should not be too large for a young pupil’s hand. Whatever is being used should allow the pupil to hold it easily and correctly so that the bad habits are avoided.

As stated by the National Curriculum, GOV.UK

Parents also have a role to play in helping their child become comfortable with handwriting, particularly when it comes to practise. This is the only way to raise standards of writing across the board.
